On the afternoon of 29 May 2004, at
Operation Lion Claws III in the Tehachapi Mountains, California, operating
independently as a detached mechanized component of Shadow Force acting in
support of Bravo Company, S/Sgt. Ramsell was the driver and Cpl. Horrocks
the gunner of CIMCOM CO5, the LAV Amphibious Vehicle with twin turret-mounted
AEGs. In the afternoon scenario, while acting as roving support of Bravo
Company, Ramsell and Horrocks spotted an entire enemy platoon moving
aggressively to attack an outnumbered Bravo force defending an key scenario
objective. The beleaguered Bravo unit faced certain annihilation,
therefore S/Sgt. Ramsell elected to aggressively press an attack despite
overwhelming numerical superiority of the enemy. Instructing Cpl. Horrocks
to "bolt on his socks," S/Sgt. Ramsell expertly guided the LAV across
treacherous cross-country terrain in a bold attack that stunned the enemy by its
sheer audacity. Using the custom twin-mounted AEGs with expert precision,
Cpl. Horrocks directed a rapid and accurate stream of fire at the attacking
Alpha Company unit, quickly sapping the initiative of their attack against the
surrounded Bravo unit. Under this aggressive and sustained attack, the
Alpha attack quickly turned from a well-conceived and well-lead attack into
a mad scramble of sheer pandemonium. When the dust settled, at least an
entire platoon (more than 32 enemy operators) of Alpha was wiped out,
including (but unbeknownst to Bravo) the commander of Alpha Company, Colonel
Danny McKnight. The key objective was held by the surrounded Bravo unit,
and with the scenario ending shortly thereafter, Bravo Company completed its
mission successfully and dramatically outscored Alpha.
For their daring and fortuitous
action resulting in decisive victory for their Company, S/Sgt. Ramsell and Cpl.
Horrocks are awarded the Valor patch. Their exemplary performance brought
honor and glory to the Cimmerians, was a credit to their Company, and was in
keeping with the highest traditions of the Cimmerian's warrior creed.
Please join CimCom
and me in congratulating S/Sgt. Ramsell and Cpl. Horrocks for their
well-deserved awards.
