Operation Began 10:35 hours (1 hour weather delay on insertion). Europa
and Shadow teams successfully inserted by helo at AO. Europa team
formed up and patrolled in search of SDU29. Upon locating an SDU they
determined it was SDU44 and because of concern for booby traps withdrew
from the area. 5min after withdrawing SDU44's transponder ceased, Europa
assumed that Shadow had recovered it. Europa proceeded to the map
designated crash site and searched for SDU29. With occasional light
contact with enemy teams, Europa did not find any evidence of SDU29.
Europa leaders decided to seek out the Shadow team, under the assumption
they had recovered SDU29 as well as SDU44. Europa regrouped in the north
west quad of the AO and discovered a lone Shadow shooter in possession of
SDU29. Europa eliminated the Shadow man and recovered SDU29. Immediately
called for extract and collected 9 out of 10 team members at the extract
LZ. After weighing the missing man the decision was made to extract 9of10
men and complete the mission. |
Shadow Team formed up and patrolled in search of SDU44. With tight
organization by the team leader and precise navigation by the point element,
move to homing range of an SDU transponder. They came upon an SDU, secured a
perimeter, determined it was SDU29. In an innovative response the Team Leader
proceeded to decode the transponder lockout code, silencing its homing beacon.
They divided into a Stay Behind team and a search team and proceeded to search
at the map location for SDU44. Extensive searches came up empty. Unknown to
Shadow Team, The transponder had failed on its own leaving the team in
occasional contact with a hostile enemy searching for a "needle in a snow
storm". Under the assumption that the Europa team had recovered their SDU ,
Shadow returned to their Earlier location and attempted to fix the location of
Europa. The Shadow Stay Behind team was attacked by a superior Europa force and
lost SDU29. |
Stand down at 1300hrs to rest and refit.
Operations recommenced at 1400hrs with Europa team called in from the
evac helo to return to the AO and interdict and eliminate the Shadow team, who
had by then located their SDU. This operation took on the form of a tactical
advance where the SDU was moved along a designated line of march (trail marked
in snow).
Europa team hit Shadow hard and fast for the first 30min of the engagement.
Eventually recovering the SDU, only to loose control of the unit when the Shadow
troops re grouped and attacked. Vicious close quarters combat raged until 1600
hrs when both teams were extracted by their command authority.
